Sohn is an annual investment conference that raises money for medical research, contributing more than $40m since its inception. The conference will be in Hobart on Friday at Federation Concert Hall.

The event will welcome international keynote speakers and panellists from around the world and see rapid-fire stock pitches in a TED-style format.

Speakers this year include Bill Browder, cofounder of investment management company Hermitage Capital, Luke Harding, awardwinning foreign correspondent with The Guardian, and Gerry Cardinale, founder of investment firm RedBird Capital.

In partnership with Beacon Foundation, the selected Tasmanian students took part in a special program on Monday, designed to introduce them to the world of finance before the big day.

The program included a panel discussion, networking lunch and smaller workshops.

Tasmanian-based business and finance mentors Bruce Neil and Andrew Sypkes attended the event.

Mr Neil said it was vital to help students navigate industry lingo and jargon so they felt well equipped heading into the conference.

"It's important we try to help future generations identify and achieve their goals," he said.

Kingston High students Olivia Hood, 16, and Jack Lyons, 15, said they were looking forward to learning from the best.

"I want to go down the science and engineering path, so the conference will be very inspiring," Olivia said. "I feel very lucky to be given this opportunity."

Jack, who wants to become an electrical engineer in the Australian Defence Force, said he was also looking forward to networking with industry professionals. It will be great to learn skills, such as communication, organisation and leadership, that will help me in the future," Jack said.
